Canal & River Trust Commercial Plan

Client need

Kier Integrated Services have signed a framework agreement contract for Lot 2a of the Civil Engineering Contract (CEC) with the Canal & River Trust (CRT).

To ensure compliance and best practices in commercial and contract delivery of the CEC framework, Kier partnered with CappKind to develop a Canal & River Trust Commercial Plan that aligns with the requirements and obligations of both organisations.

Commercial Plan with continuous improvement in mind

CappKind solution

CappKind collaborated with Kier Integrated Services’ Senior Commercial Manager to determine the critical commercial processes that should be included in the Canal & River Trust Commercial Plan. We conducted a comprehensive review and analysis of the framework documentation to identify the relevant commercial processes that should be part of the plan.

To achieve this, a tabular approach was used to outline the sub-processes and subject areas. This structure included an introduction, purpose, objective procedure, and links to systems, tools, and templates in a standard format.

The key areas of focus for the Commercial Plan included:

  • Contract obligations, bonds, warranties, and insurances
  • Process, systems, and planning
  • Procurement and subcontracting
  • Reporting
  • Change management
  • Application for Payment, cost, and cash
  • Disputes

Under each area, sub sections were developed to align both Kier’s and the CEC frameworks contract and commercial elements.

Navigating contract and commercial delivery: CappKind and Kier's tabular approach

The impact

CappKind’s tabular structure approach to the Canal & River Trust Commercial Plan and standardised sections make it simple for readers to navigate and comprehend the background, purpose, objectives, and procedures for every contract and commercial delivery requirement on the CEC framework.

Our approach offers the benefit of being a live document that can be regularly updated, maintained, and expanded upon, enabling continuous improvement.
